SOUVENIRS II

Concept
Memory and the transformation of our experiences of space and time bring about the continual adaptation of concepts of self-identity. I am motivated to investigate the issue of self-identity which relates to the physical experience of bodily sensations. I compare and layer different experiences from the past and the present to produce a series of works, “Souvenirs,” which intends to explore the connotations and possible interpretations of souvenirs of the visible and the invisible as well as the body and the memory. I collect ordinary objects from my daily life and use body gestures to transform them into a new life. The body provides a location which transmits sensory experiences through vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste. These senses evoke feelings and trigger a momentary trip to the past. Memory serves as the trigger and provides stimulus in different moments. The present bodily senses integrate with the past memories to bring about the sense of nostalgia.
“Souvenirs II” presents in sculpture, installation, video and photographs, this transformation endows these materials a new life as generates a new self-identity of a foreigner.
